From Welcombe’s wild beach and waterfall to the lighthouse at Hartland Point, this part of the coast is wild. The beach at Hartland Quay is the best place to see it in its splendour – and also to enjoy a pint overlooking the Atlantic. In the calmer waters of Bideford Bay you’ll find Clovelly, a village with no cars that tumbles down the Cliffside like a whitewashed waterfall. The harbour is beautiful and the views wonderful. A little further are Buck’s Mills and the Peppercombe Valley. Both are beautiful, with lovely sand at low tide.
Westward Ho! Appledore and Instow
The beach at Westward Ho! is fabulous. It’s a couple of miles long and stretches from the Taw and Torridge Estuary in the north to Westward Ho! and Northam in the south. The village has everything anyone could want from a great family holiday: fish and chips, restaurants, a place to walk the dog and good, safe surfing. A little up river you’ll find Appledore, a delightful fishing village with winding lanes and tucked away pubs and art galleries. Opposite sits Instow in the sun, with its own lovely sandy beach and dunes. It’s a great place to watch the sun go down.
Saunton and Croyde
Somehow the sun always shines on Saunton. Its huge beach and dune system sits on the north side of the Taw and Torridge Estuary and has its own microclimate – well it seems like it – that gives it more sunny days than anywhere else on the coast. It’s the closest beach to Braunton, a pretty village that’s great for surf shop shopping and eating out. Just around the headland from Saunton Beach is Croyde, a village with a fabulous sandy beach that’s as famous for its surf as it is for being a really pretty village. It’s popular, and rightly so – it’s fabulous.
Woolacombe and Putsborough
Between Putsborough and Woolacombe lies three miles of lovely sandy beach. The surf is great, the water is clear and the walking is excellent. The south end, Putsborough, is quiet, with a café and car park and a few holiday cottages, whilst Woolacombe is a lively resort that’s never brash. It’s home to some good restaurants, fine chippys and a few surf shops. Some of our most popular holiday cottages enjoy wonderful sea views here too. You’ll love it!
